Colt Webb joins the shortlist of local players

Colt Webb joins the shortlist of local players (Ryan Kennedy, Anthony Simonelli, and Bryan Whitacre) that will be a part of the Winchester Royals this summer. A native of Berryville, Webb enjoys the luxury of playing in a competitive summer league that is just minutes away from home.

“It helps staying local because I feel more comfortable, so I definitely think it will be a beneficial experience,” Webb said.

The rising sophomore started nine games for Potomac State College (Keyser, WV) this past spring, sporting a 4.53 ERA. He struck out 61 batters over 43.2 innings, creating a 12.57 K/9 rate. Of those nine starts and one appearance in relief, Webb finished the season boasting a 7-3 record in a pitching staff that recorded 35 victories on the year.

“(My freshman season) was pretty good. It was pretty smooth. I was in the rotation as a freshman,” Webb said.

With Webb, the Royals receive a pitcher who controls the strike zone and throws a lot of innings. In addition to leading his team in wins and strikeouts, he ranked second among starters in walks allowed (17) and innings pitched.

“Hitting my spots and staying low in the zone is going to get me some playing time (this summer),” Webb said.

His six foot, five inch stature on the mound is already an intimidating sight. Combine that with a fastball that touches 90 mph and a diving splitter, and head coach Jacob Mays has a budding young talent that he can develop into a force this summer.

“I hope to get some exposure from either colleges or pro; to help out with the process of getting to my next destination,” Webb said.

With the help of seasoned college players like Nick Beardsley and Whitacre, Webb has a pool of knowledge to learn from, and hopes to make huge developmental leaps this season. He joins a staff of 16 other pitchers, with just under 30 percent of them appearing in their first summer league season.

The tools and potential are there for Webb, and the Royals are the ideal building block for his young career.
