Huntley’s home run sparks comeback in Royals’ third straight win
WAYNESBORO – Through six innings at Kate Collins Field on Friday night, the Royals mustered just four hits and trailed 4-1 to Waynesboro. In the last third of the game, Winchester scored seven unanswered runs to take down the Generals, 8-4.
Jordan Huntley’s three-run home run in the seventh inning sparked the comeback. Chad Feely and Matthew Holloway each singled. With two outs, Huntley slugged his first home run of the season to tie the game, 4-4.
With all the momentum, Winchester put three more on the board. Matthew Holloway took the lead with an RBI fielder’s choice. Then with the help of an error, two additional runs crossed the plate to give the Royals a 7-4 lead. Feely added an insurance run in the ninth with a sac fly, while Trent Sidwell shut the door with a perfect two innings out of the bullpen.
Anthony Simonelli got the start, and grinded through five innings. He allowed four runs to cross the plate in the first two innings (three earned), but held the Generals in check for the last three innings of the outing. Simonelli went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out seven in the no-decision.
Emilio Valdes pitched the sixth and seventh innings, and recovered nicely from his rusty debut on Monday. He allowed just one hit and walked two batters in the six outs he threw. After the Royals took the lead, Sidwell pitched the last six outs. In 10 appearances this season, the righty has a perfect 0.00 ERA with 10.2 innings pitched.
In addition to Huntley (2-for-4, 4 RBI), Samyr Santos went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Holloway finished with a multi-hit night as well (2-for-4)
Winchester (8-10) returns to Bridgeforth Field on Saturday, as it hosts the Purcellville Cannons (11-9).
