Chad Feely's grand slam pushes Royals past Tom Sox, 8-4

WINCHESTER – Powered by three home runs, most notably a grand slam from Chad Feely in the sixth inning, the Winchester Royals powered past the Charlottesville Tom Sox on Thursday night at Bridgeforth Field, 8-4.

In his second at-bat in the Valley Baseball League, newcomer Ray Gil sent a two-strike fastball to the opposite field. The ball kept carrying and ended up over the right-center fence for his first hit, home run and RBI of his VBL career. This gave the Royals the opening run in the second inning.

A couple batters later, with a runner on base, Samyr Santos sent a rising fastball over the left center fence on a line to give Winchester a 3-0 lead.

Some two-out execution hitting gave the hosts five more runs to open up an 8-1 lead. In the fourth, Johnny Butler drew a walk and stole second base. Masen Prososky drove in his teammate with a ground ball through the first and second base hole. Butler scored with ease to give the Royals a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth, Will Welsh sent a tailing pop up that fell in front of center field for a two-out single. After Santos drew a walk, Aaron Palensky drove his second hit of the game to left field. Chad Feely then stepped up to the plate, having grounded out to the pitcher in his last at-bat.

After fighting off a couple two-strike pitches, Feely sent a deep drive out to left field. He knew he got all of it, flipping his bat with exuberance. His ball kept traveling even after it went over the left field fence for a grand slam to give Winchester a hefty cushion.

Had it not been for the six walks he issued, Ruben Ramirez had the stuff to go deep in to this game. He went 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit. His only run allowed came in the third from a sacrifice fly, as the Puerto Rico native struck out eight en route to his first win of the season.

He exited with a couple runners on base, who Hank Biggs left stranded to finish out the sixth. He allowed three runs in the seventh before Bryan Whitacre relieved him in the eighth. Whitacre worked a scoreless two innings, allowing one hit while striking out three.
