Winchester wins third straight over New Market, 7-3
NEW MARKET – The Winchester Royals have won three straight and eight of their last ten with a 7-3 win over the New Market Rebels at Rebels Park on Saturday.
Nick Beardsley got the start and went six innings, scattering three runs on eight hits while striking out six. In the fourth, a leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI single and another run came across on a sac fly. In the sixth, Chas Sudduth laced a triple, and scored on the same play with an error from Matthew Holloway.
Offensively, Winchester scored runs all their runs in the second and fifth innings. In the second, Lucas Oxendine stroked a two-out double to score Chad Feely. Holloway followed with a triple and Jonny Butler slapped a run-scoring single, making that three two-out hits for a three-run inning.
In the fifth, Samyr Santos drove in a run with an RBI single and Feely followed with a triple. Feely scored a couple batters later from a wild pitch and Ray Gil scored off an error to end the scoring.
Bryan Whitacre pitched to the minimum in the seventh and eighth innings, whereas Trent Sidwell locked down his fourth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.
The Royals (13-12) travel to Purcellville to play the Cannons (15-11) on Monday. First pitch is at 7 p.m. at Fireman’s Field.
