Bats go cold as Winchester falls to Waynesboro

WINCHESTER – One would not think that the fourth and seventh best pitching staffs in the Valley Baseball League would yield such a pitching duel at Bridgeforth Field on Wednesday night. Five hits combined, and as many errors. Although the Royals were on the wrong side of a 3-1 result against the Front Royal Cardinals.

Southpaw Dylan Gentry toed the rubber and threw six impressive innings. Three runs came across to score for Front Royal, all unearned. Gentry permitted just two hits while issuing five walks and striking out eight.

The Cardinals runs came in the fourth inning. Zion Pettigrew fielded a slow chopper on the run and fired a throw across his body, but the ball sailed over Samyr Santos’ head for an error. After recording a strikeout, Gentry walked Andrew Orzel.

After recording the second out of the inning, Gentry walked Dalton Wingo to load the bases. Bruno Teramoto came up next and roped a ground ball that stayed within the third base line to clear the bases and give Front Royal their first and only lead, 3-1.

Winchester’s lone run came in the first inning. With Joe Sadallah on second, Johnny Butler singled softly up the middle. Sadallah was initially held up at third, but Chase Cheek’s throw in tipped off Alex Webb’s glove and Sadallah sprinted across the plate.

The Royals’ best opportunity to match Waynesboro came in the sixth inning. Masen Prososky reached on a hit by pitch and Butler drew a walk to start the frame. A couple batters later, Aaron Palensky reached on an error to load the bases with one out.

Waynesboro then called Austin Hohm from the bullpen. He induced an inning-ending double play off the bat of Ray Gil to end the threat. Hohm retired eight straight before Santos reached on an infield single to begin the ninth. However, he induced three consecutive fly balls to lock down the 11-out save.

James Grant and Jake Posey combined for three perfect innings out of the bullpen. Pettigrew accounted for the only other hit, a single in the second inning.
