Royals clinch playoffs with sweep of Woodstock

WINCHESTER -- The Royals officially clinched the postseason with a win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Woodstock River Bandits at Bridgeforth Field on Friday night, 8-3.

This was largely due to the performance of Zion Pettigrew. He belted two home runs and a double as part of a six-RBI game.

Woodstock struck first with an RBI groundout. Masen Prososky, who had four RBI a couple hours earlier, struck for another with an RBI single to right field to tie the game.

Then Pettigrew took over.

A couple batters later, he sent his first home run over the left field fence to give the Royals a slight one-run lead. Woodstock countered with a pair of RBI singles from Brock Johnson and Bryan Nunez to take a 3-2 lead

In the bottom half, with the bases loaded and two outs, Pettigrew sent a drive to center field that nearly cleared the fence. Although, he settled for a bases clearing double to regain a 5-3 lead.

In the fifth, Pettigrew slugged his second home run of the game, a two-run bomb over the left field fence for his fifth and sixth RBI of the contest.

Prososky added an insurance run in the sixth with a groundout. Between both games, he collected six RBI as well.

Kody Gardere nearly went a complete game (6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K), but Royals manager Jacob Mays decided to let Prososky record the final out.
